CHARLES W. HARRIS Orogenic Studies Laboratory, Department of Geological Sciences, . Abstract. Basement is traditionally considered crust generated during an earlier cycle of tectonic activity. In the Appalachian orogen, Grenvillian (– Ga) rocks commonly and correctly are thought of as the Laurentian cycle basement precursor to the Paleozoic Appalachian Wilson cycle tectonism.

      The Southeastern United States, in particular, the Carolina slate belt of Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia, has been an important region of mineral production (fig. 1). This region is thought to have major potential for containing large undiscovered deposits of gold and silver, as well as copper, lead, zinc, molybdenum, and.   In the Appalachian Piedmont southeast of the Talladega Slate belt, thrust sheets of higher grade metamorphic rocks represent accreted terranes (Fig. 1, Fig. 2) (e.g., the Jefferson, Inner Piedmont, and Carolina terranes; Horton et al., ).
